An agent of change who fights against the ways of the world to protect all he holds dear
The eldest son of the Rosfield ducal family who rule the Grand Duchy of Rosaria. He lost his father and younger brother in the attack on Phoenix Gate and was himself subjugated as an imperial Bearer. Though he was long possessed by his desire for revenge and unable to look beyond himself to the world around him, upon meeting Cid, he learns Valisthea’s reality and comes to desire to change the state of the world in which it is hard for people to simply live normal lives. Earnest and possessed of a strong sense of responsibility, Clive has a strong will and, once he has resolved to do something, will see it through to fruition. By that same token, however, he has a tendency to take everything upon himself.
Memorable Words
「No matter how cruel a “reality” awaits me, I will continue to rail against it.」
—The ruins of Phoenix Gate: Resolving to live after having accepted his past
- Line in the English version: “No matter how bitter the truth that awaits me, I will press on.”
Clive had been unable to accept his past of having slain Joshua by his own hand. Still, he resolves that he must know the truth for his brother’s sake as well, and faces who he truly is, something he had long turned away from.
「What we wish for, what we want to create is a world in which people can live as human beings...!」
—The Naldia Narrow: Refuting Barnabas’ preachings of salvation through being turned Akashic
- Line in the English version: “We don’t need your salvation. We’ll save ourselves. And we’ll do it on our own terms.”
He flatly rejects Barnabas’ assertion that people can be freed from suffering by surrendering their free will. The world that Clive aims to create is one in which, no matter what difficulty they may face, people can join hands and meet it.
Clive’s Eikon
Ifrit
A second Eikon of Fire, which overturned the common view that “there is one Eikon for each of the elements” with its appearance. It takes the form of a beast wreathed in hellfire and strikes down its enemies with its flames and immense strength.
About Clive
As the Phoenix’s First Shield
Though his younger brother Joshua’s awakening to the power of the Phoenix meant that Clive was no longer heir to the ducal throne, he trains with the sword as would any other knight, and, at the tender age of fifteen, earns the title of First Shield, the highest possible achievement for a Ducal Shield. Clive, who received the Blessing of the Phoenix and was formally acknowledged as Joshua’s protector in both name and truth, swore to protect his younger brother no matter what. This vow to “protect what he holds dear” is also a pillar of his psyche.
[IMG]⬆︎Clive’s fighting style of weilding flame and sword can be said to be emblematic of the Phoenix’s First Shield.
He fights with the will inherited from those who came before him
Clive, who came to share Cid’s desire to create “a world in which people can live on their own terms,” cooperates with him on his plan to destroy the Mothercrystals. After Cid fell without realizing this dream, Clive inherits his will, assumes the name “Cid the Second,” and continues his unfinished work alongside his companions. His way of never lamenting his fate and continuing to fight by his own free will is reminiscent of the way his father Elwin, who wished to save as many people as he could, lived.
[IMG]⬆︎Clive, who is adored and depended upon by the Hideaway’s inhabitants. He leads the organization with the charisma he inherited from his father.

About Joshua
A childhood spent comparing himself to his older brother
Joshua, who awakened as the Dominant of the Phoenix not long after birth, held the position of heir to the ducal throne. For this reason, though he was guaranteed a life of privilege and adored by the nobility from before he was old enough to be self-aware, he came to think pessimistically that it was only because they were dependant upon the power of the Phoenix. In his young heart he believed that, rather than he, who was sickly and always being protected by others, his older brother, Clive, a capable knight, should be the one to lead.
[IMG]⬆︎Clive, who accomplishes things by his own power, is both the object of Joshua’s admiration and the person he trusts most in the world.
As Suzerain of the Undying
After sustaining near-fatal injuries in the attack on Phoenix Gate, Joshua was rescued by the Undying, who are responsible for Rosaria’s covert operations. Joshua, who became the suzerain of the Undying in both name and truth upon regaining consciousness, directs the members of the order to investigate both Clive’s whereabouts and the identity of the one behind the incident at Phoenix Gate. He himself scours every text he can find, finally arriving at mention of a being called “Ultima” in the writings of Moss the Chronicler.
[IMG]⬆︎While traveling across the realm with his attendant, Jote, Joshua used the alias “Margrace.”

While this meant that she was spared from death, henceforth, she would lead brutal days as a weapon of the Iron Kingdom. Jill, who had the captive young girls used as hostages against her, killed her own heart and continued to fight as she was ordered. Finally, just as she is reaching her limit both physically and emotionally from the guilt of having taken countless lives and despair over the fact that the girls continue to be beaten, Jill faces off with Clive on the battlefield.

Praying to Metia on moonlit nights
There is a tradition in Valisthea that if you make a wish on Metia, the star that twinkles beside the moon, it will come true. As a child as well, Jill prayed to Metia for Clive and the others’ safety the night before the attack on Phoenix Gate. After growing into adults and managing to reunite after many twists and turns, Jill and Clive have many opportunities to talk on nights when the moon and Metia shine in the sky, and this grows to be precious time for the two of them.

The prince of Sanbreque who leads the Holy Knights Dragoon. Possessed of a strong sense of duty and upstanding nature, he is held in great regard by both his subordinates and the populace and has accomplished countless feats of arms fighting on the front as the Dominant of Bahamut. About Dion
Wanting for his father’s love
In truth, Dion has a complicated lineage in that he is not the child of Sylvestre’s lawful wife, but rather was born of a common woman. While that truth has been concealed, the existence of a child who inherits lowborn blood can be considered a stain upon Sylvestre. While vaguely sensing that his father shunned him, he continued to accrue accomplishments, trusting that one day his father would acknowledge him. However, with the birth of his half-brother, Olivier, Dion becomes ever further isolated.
[IMG]⬆︎Dion, who sensed that Sylvestre had been used in Anabella’s schemes, resolves to lead a revolt in order to save his father.

The descendant of a people who worshipped Ultima

Believing that the Children of Dzemekys will be saved once the lord’s vessel is complete, he worked to make Mythos—Clive obtain power.

A ruthless military officer exceptionally skilled at carrying out missions
A soldier serving as the commander of the Kingdom of Waloed’s elite intelligencers. She is also an exceptional swordswoman and the Dominant of the Eikon of Wind, Garuda. While she behaves insolently towards her enemies, she is also highly emotionally dependent, as seen in the way that she affirms her self-worth through King Barnabas’ acknowledgement. She becomes involved with Hugo of the Republic of Dhalmekia on Barnabas’ orders and has him wrapped around her little finger. She has a non-trivial past with former Lord High Commander Cid, and even as she resents him for being a traitor, she continues to carefully keep the pendant he left behind, unable to fully rid herself of her feelings for him.
Memorable Words
「The lofty opinion of the Lord High Commander, is it?! I was a fool for having thought even a little (that you might come back to us)! The one who pities me is you, Cidolfus .」
—Caer Norvent: Taking out her frustration at Cid for not responding to her attempt to persuade him
- Line in the English version: “A rousing speech, Lord Commander. I was a fool to believe you might have changed. The only person I feel sorry for is you.”
Cid doesn’t lend an ear to Benedikta when she tells him to “return to Waloed.” As circumstance dictates that the two cannot walk the same path, Cid’s concerned appeal does nothing but stoke her rage.
Benedikta’s Eikon
Garuda
The Eikon of Wind, which takes the form of a winged human. Wielding her massive claws and raging tempests, she rends all things.
About Benedikta
Tangled feelings of love and hate for Cid
To Benedikta, Cid is the savior to whom she is indebted for rescuing her from violent circumstances. He is also the one who taught her how to live as a human being and how to fight, and it is thanks to him that Benedikta was able to become a Waloeder soldier and begin to walk a new path in life. However, ever since Cid left Waloed, she came to harbor an intense anger towards him for abandoning his king and country. That may well have been the inversion of her adoration for him.
