Snowdrop Quotes – Pi Seung-hee

“The slightest slip of the tongue can kill a person.”

EP01

“Show me a search warrant. Without a warrant, you cannot take a single step– (…) This is a sector forbidden to men, no one can enter without a warrant.”

EP02

“Emergency. Emergency. Outsiders have trespassed. Lock the doors immediately and absolutely do not open them until I instruct you otherwise. I repeat. Outsiders have trespassed without permission. All students, wherever they are currently, are to shut and lock the doors; absolutely do not open them until I instruct you otherwise, and standby inside. In the event that you disobey these instructions, severe punishment, such as eviction, will follow, so bear that well in mind. Emergency. Outsiders have trespassed. Do not open the doors for them and standby at your current positions.”

Han-na: Instruct them to open the doors immediately. I have a bloody quick temper, you know?
Ms Pi: Right now (Han-na points a gun at her) ...students are to shut and lock the doors–

“I told you not to spout off rashly, didn’t I? The slightest slip of the tongue* can kill a person.”

[*Literally: ‘three centimeters of the flat of the tongue’]

Gye Bun-ok: Is Sea of Blood that scary? Hah, then again, if Hall Director Pi catches you, everyone and everything turns to a sea of blood, so I guess you would be scared.

[n.b. This dropped out of the Disney+ subs, but Bun-ok and the students refer to Ms Pi as ‘Pi-bada’ (피바다), meaning ‘blood-sea’ since her surname (皮) is a homophone for blood, ‘pi’ (血).]

EP03

“Why would students be in possession of expensive things? It’s because you lot provide cause that these things happen! Don’t thoughtlessly suspect someone and get rid of your expensive items this instant. Inspiring envy in others is a sin, as well!”

“Are you jealous? Do you envy them? Do you think that if you steal and don the things they own you’ll become like them? (…) That’s right. You’re you, and they are them. Live properly; don’t affect some ridiculous imitation. Put everything back in its place. Since I’ll forgive you just this once. But, there won’t be a next time. From now on, comport yourself properly. Get out.”

EP04

“Conduct yourselves properly. A single poor decision can destroy your life.”

“The person the girls hid isn’t a spy but a student activist. (…) Fine. Let’s say he is a spy. Simply because they housed and fed him, do you think that constitutes aiding and abetting a spy? Unless it’s ruled as aiding and abetting in a court of law, you won’t receive the reward money. (…) ‘Duty’? If you report them, do you imagine you won’t be investigated? They make perfectly normal people into spies just to improve their performance records; where else would they find such easy prey as you? You’re the younger sister of a red. (…) Because of your older sister, your perfectly normal household was blown to bits, but you want to go through that hardship again? Fifty million won? You’d be lucky to be spared torture. You’d be lucky not to go to jail. Don’t do anything foolish and stay put. Have you forgotten the fact that not even a factory would employ you? If it weren’t for my old teacher’s request, I wouldn’t have employed the likes of you. If you understand, tell everyone in Room 207 to come to my office.”

[n.b. 50 million KRW is about 31,000 GBP/41,000 USD today. I’m not sure what that would have worked out to in 1987, but it’s certainly enough incentivise Bun-ok.]

“They’re people that chased him here to catch a spy. They could just as easily make you lot into spies, too. No — they’re people who could make this entire dorm into a den of spies and then some.”

“Fine, since you say you’ll take responsibility, Eun Young-ro, pack your things and leave at once tomorrow. (…) Of course, Eun Young-ro couldn’t possibly have managed it alone. But she’ll have been the main instigator. He was your partner, right? (to Young-ro, lowly) Moreover, shouldn’t you be the last to do something like this? Your father will be disappointed.”

EP05

“I’m the hall director of this dormitory. Would you people know every nook and cranny of this building as well as I?”

“Shush, don’t cry. Get yourselves together. It’s said that even spider’s silk when gathered can bind a lion.”

EP06

“Students with chronic medical conditions are difficult to manage, but there are other students that are truly hard to control. There’s a girl who suffers from somnambulism and wanders the halls every night, girls who know no fear and make petrol bombs and throw them and...there are mad girls (places Young-ro’s file in front of Soo-ho) who expressly do the things you tell them not to. Think about it. Despite knowing full well that if they disobeyed the rules they’d be thrown out, they brazenly deceived me, fooled the ANSP agents and, heavens! hid you in the sauna room benchseat, didn’t they? Stripped bare — they’re those sort of girls. They’re audacious. For the moment, they’re frightened and will likely behave but the more time passes the more difficult they’ll be to handle. If you go thinking that because they’re college girls they’ll be docile, you’ll pay dearly.”

“She’s our phone operator here at the dorm; she’s taking care of her ill father and her mother. A pitiable child who’s acting as the family’s breadwinner. I’d like it if...you’d make certain to release her.”

EP07

“Did Eun Young-ro disclose that herself? That she’s the ANSP director’s daughter? And yet she didn’t breathe a word about it when she was kicked out of the dorm. (…) She was evicted when it got out that she had hidden you. She helped you without the slightest suspicion, believing she was doing good. So, not only did she not regret or show remorse for her actions, she came forward saying she’d gladly submit to any punishment. But since that bravery and sacrifice only reduced the dormitory to this state and drove her friends into mortal peril...have you thought of how Eun Young-ro must be feeling now? If you can fathom her feelings even the slightest bit, you ought to release even one more student. That ... is the least of what you owe the person who risked herself to save you.”

“You were Eun Young-ro’s partner at the Open House, weren’t you? There was clearly heat in your expression; was it all for show? Did you simply use Eun Young-ro so thoroughly?”

EP08

“This is the Rhine, this is the Rhine. Come in VIP, over.”

(※Attention: The ANSP director’s daughter, Eun Young-ro, received a necklace as a gift from the unidentified man she invited to the Open House. It’s certain the two are dating)

EP09

“The same side? Shut your mouth before I tear you to shreds. I am sick to death when it comes you bastards.”

“Team leader-nim. Since you and I are both in the position of having our lives held as collateral anyway, I’ll tell you. Though I may be a weak being who was made to submit to your* strength, I’ve never sold out my students to you demons who get promoted for making innocents into spies.”

[n.b. ‘your’ here is plural, as she’s referring to the entire ANSP.]

EP10

Cheong-ya: The hall director of a women’s dormitory wiretapped the students and narked on them to the ANSP? Just how is it that the lofty Hall Director became the ANSP’s informant*?
Ms Pi: The doctor sent by the ANSP is a spy. Could my circumstances possibly compare to yours?

[*n.b. The word used here is ‘purakchi’ (프락치) a loan word taken from the Russian ‘fraktsiya’ (Фракция), which I gather means something like ‘mole’ or ‘inside man.’]

“In order to ensure everyone’s silence, you’ll of course have to kill every last person. But do you think doing so will ensure your identity remains secret forever? Just like me, one day for sure, your identity will be discovered. And then you, too, will start to wonder what it was you lived for. How do you intend to come to terms with that futile life if you’re willing to kill all the innocent students?”

“You’re the only person we can trust. Please, save the students. The children have done nothing wrong; you know that as well, don’t you.”

“Hardly. Don’t force yourself to try to understand. The woman who rigidly stood on principle acted as an informant for the ANSP. That is fact.”

“‘In’yeon? Is being harassed by a demon also in’yeon? Even after accusing a perfectly normal person of being a spy and killing two others, you bastards received medals and even reward money. Allegedly having served your country! Do you think I would forget that? (…) The bastard who tortured me most ruthlessly shed tears in public on the day I was released. Wearing the same face you are now.”

EP11

“Indeed? Then you should shoot. Shoot!! You foolish wretch. Just how did your sister die that you’re playing at being a spy? Do you want to go the same way your sister did?!”

“Shut your mouth. Jabbering on selfishly without knowing how grave the situation is. The ANSP could kill the spies, naturally, and even us, if need be. For the sake of winning the election, the lives of a mere thirty people? They’re nothing to the ANSP.*”

[*Literally: ‘the ANSP finds them laughable/trivial’]

Ms Pi: Your friends that were released yesterday didn’t go home; they were dragged off to the ANSP. Now do the words ‘the hostage-taking is a plot for the election’ feel real? The bastards will doubtlessly want to broadcast footage of the student hostages trembling in fear of their spy captors. If that gets aired, what thought will pop into people’s heads? (…) Correct. Anti-communist sentiment will likely increase. Then that will likely be to the ruling party’s advantage in the election. What will become of us?
Gyeong-ja: The more of an advantage the ruling party gains in the election, the more our chances of getting out alive dwindle, right?
Ms Pi: Right, therefore, how should we appear in the footage? You understand what it is I’m saying?

EP12

“Stop acting rash. Since the goal is to get everyone out alive however possible. Don’t strive to save only yourself.”

Ms Pi: Gye Bun-ok. If you keep going off the deep end like this, I won’t be able to protect you any longer.
Gye Bun-ok: Protect me? You worked me to the bone and were dismissive of me and used me, and you say you protected me?
Ms Pi: Is that why you pulled the trigger? To think, you ran amuck not even knowing the gun was unloaded. Did that doctor say she would save your father? How little she must have trusted you to give you an unloaded gun. That is being dismissive of you and using you. Understand?

“Yes, Bun-ok-ie’s words are the inescapable truth. Since the ANSP had me install listening devices and monitor you all. But, on my oath, I have never sold you out to the ANSP.”

EP13

“Young-ro failed to persuade her father, didn’t she? (…) If so, those bastards won’t bat an eye at killing the students.”

EP14

“How could something like ideology or creed be more important than love? That...is a truth of life that doesn’t distinguish between genders.”

EP15

“No. Neither I nor your sister ever acted as spies! (…) The one who went to Pyongyang was professor Choi Seong-mook, a naturalized German citizen. That man* didn’t go. For the sole reason that he was Professor Choi’s student, he was accused of being a spy. A hot-blooded young man who rejected the military dictatorship was framed as a spy for that sole reason.”

[*n.b. ‘That man’ = her one-time fiancé]

“Satisfied? Don’t strive to save only yourself. Anyone with power who can help you is a ‘thank you’? Do you know who that is? He’s the bastard who tortured your sister. He’s the one who tortured your sister until she could no longer bear it and killed herself.”

EP16

“Yes. Your older sister, Yeon-ok-ie, and I were the best of friends. However, I learnt that Yun-ok-ie became pregnant with the child of my beloved fiancé, of all people. There was nothing I could do. I couldn’t bear it and wound up returning to Korea without finishing my thesis. Just four days after I’d returned to the country, I was dragged off to the ANSP without even knowing why.”

“I didn’t know it then. Those demons, those human butchers, based solely on the fact that my fiancé was a student of North Korean scholar Professor Choi Seong-mook...they were in the midst of fabricating a Munich spy-ring case in an attempt to ensure the security of the regime. I held out for some weeks, but in the end...I had no choice but to give a false statement. (…) In front of the bastards who were insisting I had gone to Pyongyang with my fiancé, I stated that the one who had gone to Pyongyang was not I but Yun-ok-ie. Yoon-ok-ie, who had fallen in love with my fiancé. (…) Yes, it’s my fault. Because of me, Yun-ok-ie, unable to bear up under torture, committed suicide, and my fiancé became a human vegetable. As an aftereffect of the torture. I visit him once a month and pay his hospital bills. And under the pretense of taking you in, I placed you beside me. I rationalized it to myself endlessly. That anyone would have given a false statement under those circumstances. (…) I know that one day I’ll have to apologise, to kneel before you, before your parents, and reveal the truth. I know it all too well, and yet, I was afraid. I was scared, Bun-ok-ah.”

“I had no other choice. I just...had to survive.”
