Snowdrop – DS : EP16 Scene 48-49

There was a long-running fan theory that Seol-hee isn’t actually the chaebol she appears to be — and it proved true, though the scene confirming it was cut. The theory was based on a few things: 1) Seol-hee has a tendency to slip into saturi when she gets worked up (an unlikely verbal tic for a chaebol’s daughter) and 2) in EP11 there’s a shot of humbly dressed man getting out of the driver’s seat of a fancy car as he calls frantically for ‘Seol-hee-ya’ (and the chairman of a mega-conglomeration would hardly be expected to drive himself). The second scene also shows Young-ro reconciling with at least one of her roommates and perhaps plants the seed for another reconciliation down the line, so it’s unfortunate there wasn’t enough runtime to include them.

Scene 482F Lounge
Far more students than in Scene 46 are crowded around the TV, watching raptly as the screen shows a close-up of Seol-hee’s father’s old and weathered face <chyron: HSWU Household Management Dept. First Year Miss Yoon Seol-hee’s Father, Yoon Deok-man-ssi (age 61), chauffeur to the chairman of Baekha Brewery>.
Seol-hee’s Father (on TV)(expression frightened, shedding endless tears) Our Seol-hee.. she’s our one and only daughter we finally managed to have when I was over forty, a daughter more precious to me than my life. If something happens to our Seol-hee, I truly won’t survive iiiit ㅠㅠ

n.b. Seol-hee’s father speaks in a pronounced saturi.
Seol-hee(heart sinks) !!!!
Gwang-tae(preposterous) Miss Yoon Seol-hee’s father? Baekha Brewery chauff...? Seol-hee-ssi!! He’s not, right??
Hye-ryeong(flabbergasted) Seol-hee-ya!!! I thought you said the chairman of Baekha Brewery is your dad?? That was a lie???
Everyone(all staring at Seol-hee) ??
Seol-hee(afraid. She takes a step backward and then rushes out of the lounge)
“Seol-hee-ya!!!” Young-ro cries, hurriedly running out after her.
Gwang-tae(all worked up) Hoo~ I’m seriously about to lose it. Did I, the matchless Oh Gwang-tae, someone who passed the first round of the civil service exam in finance administration, just get conned? Am I insane that I’d go through this crap if she wasn’t the daughter of Baekha Brewery’s chairman?????
Byeong-tae(smacking Gwang-tae upside the head) Auff, you bloody disgrace to men everywhere!
Shin Gyeong-ja(preposterous) Seol-hee’s dad provided all the prizes for the Open House, right? What was that?
Hye-ryeongShe must’ve begged her dad to help her pretend she was some chaebol’s daughter!!!
Jeong-min(flabbergasted) You and I are dupes.* To think the first years in our room pulled one over on us!!

*The idiom she uses here is literally ‘a pair of padded trousers’ (핫바지) meaning someone easily fooled, a pushover, a naïve fool, etc.
Scene 49Prayer Room
Bun-ok, her emotions complicated, lies curled up in a corner pew. Then Seol-hee comes running into the completely empty (Bun-ok is not at all visible) prayer room. She slumps down in a pew not far from Bun-ok, buries her face against the back of the pew [in front of her], and bursts into tears ... Soon, Young-ro sits down beside her ...
Young-ro(hesitantly patting Seol-hee’s back) ...
Seol-hee(shaking off Young-ro’s hand briskly / crying) Yeah, fine!!! My dad is the chairman of Baekha Brewery’s chauffeur. No, technically he’s the chairman’s mistress’ chauffeur. And my mum’s the housekeeper who even launders that woman’s underwear.
Bun-ok(that’s surprising) !!!
Seol-heeI was embarrassed of my mum and dad who bow and scrape to this way younger woman, all ‘Madam, madam.’ I hated it!!! So even when people saw me going around in a foreign car and assumed I was the daughter of Baekha Brewery’s chairman, I didn’t tell them I wasn’t.
Young-ro...
Seol-heeI hated how my mum was so poor and would send me huge parcels of shoes that woman had worn and cast off and clothes she’d gotten sick of and wouldn’t wear, so I’d stuff it all in the armoire ... and pretend I was a chaebol’s daughter who had no interest in brand name shoes or brand name clothes.
Bun-ok!!!
Young-ro(sincerely) Even so ... I ... envy you, Seol-hee-ya ... !!
Seol-hee(can’t believe it) What?
Young-roYour dad ... loves you, doesn’t he? He’s crying, isn’t he, saying he can’t live if something happens to you!
Seol-heeSo what? Isn’t that a given??
Young-ro(feeling abandoned) My dad ... even though I begged and pleaded for him to save my friends and eonnies ... even though I pleaded, saying that if even one person came to harm I wouldn’t be able to live ... he’s trying to (kill us all, she can’t bring herself to say) !!!
Seol-hee!!!
Young-roWhen I was ten ... my stepmum threw out all my mum’s things so I had a huge row with her and left home, you know? I just blindly caught a train down to my maternal grandmother’s house but ... (tears spring to her eyes) Dad ... didn’t even come looking for me. (trying her best to smile) Ever since then ... I’ve always lived with my grandmother, I tell you?
Bun-ok(sits up and stares at Young-ro; in her eyes there’s a hint of surprise, ‘so that’s how it was!’) !!!
Young-roYou, who’re loved by your mum and dad ... I’m more envious of you than anyone in the world.
“Young-ro-ya~!!” Seol-hee cries, near tears, and embraces her. Shedding silent tears, Young-ro hugs Seol-hee tight. In the row behind the two of them, we see Bun-ok lying down on her pew, seemingly thinking about how appearances aren’t everything. From her face, lost in thought, transition to ...
