We mentioned this in the EP01 Breakdown, but the flashback that appears in the version of this scene that aired (Soo-ho jumping over a cliff into the sea) is actually the continuation of the Germany train chase sequence that appears in EP01 (which is why they’re both wearing the same clothes). Originally, the flashback inserted here is one of Soo-ho and Gang-mu in Poland, the longer version of which became the EP14 bonus scene. So, while it’s left unclear in the drama, according to the script, Soo-ho recognises Gang-mu as the man whose life he once saved at this point. Likely the change was made in the interest of saving this reveal for later.

Soo-ho is twisting a wooden chopstick threaded through the piece of white cloth wrapped around Gyeok-chan’s left arm in order to thoroughly staunch the bleeding. Off to the side, Young-ro is in the midst of wrapping a suspension bandage around Gang-mu’s shoulder to staunch the bleeding. No longer bleeding, Gyeok-chan shoots a fierce glare at Young-ro (who defied his orders to the very last) and heads toward the windows. Soo-ho, gun in hand, looks on as Young-ro treats Gang-mu ...
Gang-mu | (to Young-ro with a glance at Soo-ho) You hid that man, right? I should have caught on when you played it off at the HSWU gate ... n.b. ‘You’ = ‘student’ (used as a 2nd person pronoun) |
Young-ro | (applying a suspensory bandage) I’m sorry. I really didn’t know then. |
Gang-mu | No, no. (intentionally petting Young-ro’s head) It’s all right. You didn’t know, yeah? Aiding unknowingly doesn’t count as being an accessory to espionage. (he says and, with his face covered by a hand, motions with his eyes toward the tweezers in the med kit) |
Young-ro | (gets it. Conscious of Soo-ho, her expression is extremely tense as she ties off the suspensory bandage) |
Soo-ho | (glaring daggers at Gang-mu’s out-of-the-blue motion with an incisive gaze) |
Young-ro | (picks up a cotton ball with the tweezers and applies iodine, disinfecting Gang-mu’s forehead wound) |
Gang-mu | (intentionally loudly) Ah, aah!!! |
Young-ro | I’m sorry. Oh gosh, oh gosh. Does it sting a lot? (she says, drawing close as she fans Gang-mu’s forehead with her right hand and blows on it, furtively tucking the tweezers held in her left hand into a fold of the suspension bandage) |
Gang-mu | (thank goodness) !!! |
CUT TO/ Gang-mu’s forehead wound is covered by sterilised gauze and a plaster, and Young-ro is just now closing the med kit lid. Without sparing Soo-ho so much as a glance, Young-ro tucks the med kit away nearby and goes over to the hostages (who are all lying on the floor) ...
Soo-ho | (gazing at Young-ro dispassionately) |
Gang-mu | (staring at Soo-ho, he swiftly extracts the tweezers from the fold of the suspension bandage and tucks them up his sleeve cuff) Daedong-gang 1. So this is how we finally meet! |
Soo-ho | (looking at Gang-mu only then) ? |
Gang-mu | In order to catch you, [I went to] Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Warsaw... (with a self-mocking smile) In Warsaw I almost died chasing you! |
Soo-ho | (recognises Gang-mu only then and is surprised) !!! |
FB > Mountain Cabin, Poland
Gang-mu | (eyes bound with a bandage; setting his glass down, he makes a fist of his left hand and extends it) |
Soo-ho | (also sets his glass down and does likewise, bumping his fist against Gang-mu’s) |
Gang-mu | (with a smile) Alles gute! (I wish you luck) |
Soo-ho | (fate is a bitter thing) ... |
Gang-mu | You’re a veteran, aren’t you? Isn’t it enough that Park Geum-cheol died? You want to get the rest of your men killed in a fight you can’t win? |
Soo-ho | (with a cold smile) Seems you’ve only engaged in fights you’re likely to win? |
Gang-mu | (flashing a grin) Oi! There’s a lot of things I want to hear from you. And you’re gonna have to kneel before Jin-seong-ie, who died, too. ... I’m just worried the army that’s been mobilised for this counter-espionage operation will kill you before then, is all. |
Soo-ho | (wearing a cold smile) |
