Snowdrop – DS : EP14 Scene 3-8

This one pains me. Originally, the scene at the top of EP14 in which Soo-ho confronts Gang-mu about trying to pull a double-cross was longer and included an expanded version of the EP14 bonus scene (the flashback to Warsaw). According to the script, Soo-ho has known about his in’yeon with Gang-mu since EP05, when Gang-mu talked about having pursued him all across Europe but — unlike in the version that aired — in the script, Gang-mu actually figures out it was Soo-ho who saved him back then. Jung Hae-in confirmed in interview and during the Blu-ray group commentary that they’d actually shot all of it (including some 3+ pages of dialogue in German) ...but it got edited out. ㅠ ㅠ

Scene 31F Hall Director’s Office
Gang-mu(radioing / abruptly) Who said anything about turning her over to the agency??? (desperately) That money has to make it into the dorm no matter what in order to topple the presidential election op. We have to topple that in order to save the students and arrest Daedong-gang 1 and his men. Over!!!
he says, and in the moment he switches off the radio and turns around, Soo-ho launches a furious punch at him. Murderous, Soo-ho pulls a gun on Gang-mu, who reels from the unexpected attack. Reflexively, Gang-mu quickly draws his gun and aims it at Soo-ho. The two men glare, guns levelled at each other ...
Soo-ho(gnashing his teeth at the betrayal) And they say guys from South Korea are sly bastards* who will smile to your face but rat on you behind your back ... You thought to arrest us?

*Literally: ‘fox-bastard’ or ‘child of a fox.’
Gang-mu(unabashed) A sly bastard or a rat-bastard — even if you feel betrayed, it can’t be helped. Since I’m planning to arrest you and have you defect.
Soo-hoDon’t mistake me. I teamed up with you for the sake of survival. I haven’t chosen the South.
Gang-muSince you’ve been branded a traitor, you can’t return to the North in any case, right?!!!!
Soo-hoI!!!! for the sake of our Soo-hee, as well, can never defect!!!!
Gang-mu(understands that Soo-ho is trapped between a rock and a hard place. In a persuasive tone) ... Fine, I got it. I got it, so for now let’s start by putting the guns down. Even if we fight amongst ourselves in here, we gain nothing. Right?
Soo-ho(glaring with the gun still pointed at him)
Gang-muRight? (he says and, as though he has no intention of fighting, slowly sets the handgun down on the table)
As soon as Gang-mu finally sets the gun down, Soo-ho attacks him with the speed of a leaping tiger, taking Gang-mu down to the floor, and sits on his chest, gun aimed at Gang-mu’s throat.
Soo-hoSon of a bitch. If the regime changes, you’re gonna try to put Nam Tae-il and Eun Chang-soo behind bars and return in triumph? In order to do that, you’ll have to capture us alive us and offer us up as scapegoats, won’t you???
Gang-muI’m not offering you up as a scapegoat, I’m giving you an opportunity!!! You’ve gotta get a chance to live like a human being, too, don’t you?!!!
Soo-hoEnough with the sophistry!!! I decide how I’ll live!!! As soon as Comrade Kang returns, I’m leaving with my men. (he says, moving to stand. Just then)
Gang-mu(grasps Soo-ho’s dangling pendant in his hand) And what of the students’ safety??? (just then, he looks at Soo-ho with startled eyes) Thi–this is..?
Soo-ho(with ferocious anger) I shouldn’t have saved you then!!!
Gang-mu!!!!!!
Scene 4Church, Main Hall (chyron: Spring 1986, Poland) (FB)
In an empty church, someone places an English bible in front of Soo-ho, who is pretending to pray, and disappears. Soo-ho opens it, quickly extracts the small notebook hidden inside (a hollowed out section) and stands ... Gang-mu, eyelids torn and covered in blood, throws the church doors open and enters as though fleeing. Behind him, three Polish gangsters armed with knives and cudgels and such charge in. Soo-ho shoots them a sharp glance, turns away hurriedly, and walks towards the door to the labyrinth, but ...
Gang-muDammit!!! Gimme a break!!!
Soo-ho(hearing Korean he pauses, looks back) !!!
Just as Gang-mu, who isn’t able to see well, instinctively assumes a defensive stance against the three gangsters who have crowded around him, Gangster 1 extends a hand beside Gang-mu and snaps his fingers. Seeing how Gang-mu hurriedly tenses and turns in that direction, the gangsters snicker. Then, Gangster 1 raises a nail-studded piece of wood and swings it down towards Gang-mu but in that moment — thwack!!! — he’s laid out by a flying kick. Gang-mu’s hazy vision can only make out the shape of Soo-ho who, with the fighting prowess of a wild tiger, takes down the incensed gangsters like fallen leaves ... Soon after, Soo-ho, supporting Gang-mu, takes off like a shot towards the door that leads into the labyrinth. We see the thoroughly ticked off gangsters give chase ...
Scene 5Church, Underground Labyrinth (FB)
Soo-ho runs through the labyrinth, Gang-mu’s arm slung across his shoulders. Behind them, we see the three [gangsters] giving chase like they’re out for blood while bellowing, ‘Stop right there!!!’ ‘Kill them both!!!’ in Polish ...
Scene 6Church, Outside the Labyrinth Entrance (FB)
As soon as Soo-ho — supporting Gang-mu — makes it outside, he seats Gang-mu in his car, which he’d parked nearby. As soon as he gets into the driver’s seat, he peels out, narrowly missing the gangsters who burst out of the exit with menacing looks on their faces ...
Scene 7Poland, Mountain Cabin (FB)
Soo-ho enters, supporting Gang-mu, who is blind and covered in blood. Only after seating Gang-mu off to one side does he let out a breath, as though the tension has left him ... He examines the state of Gang-mu’s injured eyes.
(Both in German:)
Soo-ho(shining a portable mini-torch) Fortunately, it seems your corneas weren’t damaged. As soon as day breaks, I think you’d best go straight to a hospital.
Gang-muThank you. How can I ever repay you? ...
Soo-hoDon’t mention it. (he says, and goes to turn away but)
Gang-mu(grabs for Soo-ho, catching hold of his dove pendant necklace) Could you at least tell me your name..?
Soo-ho‘Dove,’ let’s say it is. Since it’s practically my mascot.
Gang-mu(letting go of the necklace pendant) Danke. Mr Taube.
CUT TO/ Gang-mu’s eyes are bandaged as a temporary measure ...
Soo-ho(watching Gang-mu with a piercing gaze) It seems it’s your first time in Poland?
Gang-mu(in a bind / internally) I came after getting intel that Daedong-gang 1 is in Warsaw ... (outwardly calm) Ah, I’m a businessman posted at a Berlin branch office ... Since our company is due to open an office in Warsaw, as well, sometime next year, I came to survey the site and ... was pursued by gangsters, so ...
Soo-hoThis place is currently a lawless zone, so incidents occur several times a day. There are so few Asians that it’s especially dangerous.
Gang-muI had heard that but ... I didn’t know it would be this bad. (he says, even as he reacts sensitively to ambient noises)
Soo-ho watches closely how — despite not being able to see — Gang-mu is on guard, responding quickly even to quiet noises.
Soo-ho(internally) He’s not your average businessman. (aloud / feeling him out) You don’t appear to be Chinese ... ?
Gang-muI’m Korean. South Korea.*

*In English
Soo-ho(he’s not gonna lie?) South Korea*? What sort of country is it?
Gang-muIt’s smaller than Germany, but it’s a beautiful country where people overflowing with jeong* live. Are you German?

*jeong (情) = emotion, affection, attachment, warmth
Soo-hoYes ...
Gang-mu(internally) His accent doesn’t sound like a German’s ... Why would he be lying? (aloud) If you don’t mind, may I ask your name? I owe you my life, after all...
Soo-hoI haven’t got just one or two names ... since I’ve wandered from country to country selling things..
Gang-mu(sensing that Soo-ho is on guard) I see. (internally / suspicious) He took down those gangsters in an instant. A peddler did?
Soo-ho(internally / suspicious) A suspicious man from South Korea. Could he be ANSP..?
he thinks, cautiously drawing a small pistol from his breast pocket and training it on Gang-mu. Almost as though he can see everything, Gang-mu turns his head towards Soo-ho with animal-like instincts.
Soo-ho(watching him)
Gang-mu(something’s off) ?
Soo-ho(watching Gang-mu without so much as breathing audibly)
Gang-mu(at the tension that seems as though something could happen at any moment) !!!
Soon, the whistling of the wind batters the windows and brushes past. At the sight of Gang-mu holding back a moan due to the pain in his eyes, Soo-ho desists, putting the gun away. Behind him, rain drizzles outside the window ...
Soo-hoIt’s raining, I see. (tucks the gun into his chest pocket and reaches a hand into his bag) There’s something that suits nights like this perfectly.
Gang-mu?
Soo-ho(pulls out a bottle of vodka and sets it on the table / collects two small glasses from inside the mountain cabin and pours alcohol into the glasses; clasping Gang-mu’s hand around one) If you drink this, the pain will subside a bit.
Gang-mu(smells it) It’s vodka, I see. (accepts and drinks it, savouring the taste as it burns its way down his throat)
Soo-ho(also knocks back a shot)
Gang-muI can’t speak to anything else, but ... I think I’ll remember the taste of this vodka today for the rest of my life.
Soo-ho(smiles quietly as though in agreement with those words and refills Gang-mu’s empty glass)
Gang-mu, Soo-ho(after they’ve both knocked back another shot)
Gang-mu(with a smile) We’re both merchants, it would seem.
Soo-hoA peddler who drifts from place to place following the winds, that’s me.
Gang-muWhere will you go tomorrow?
Soo-hoThere’s a place I’ve had my eye on, but ... if business goes well this time ... I’m thinking of making a trip to my hometown.
Gang-mu(setting his glass down, he makes a fist of his left hand and extends it)
Soo-ho(also sets his glass down and does likewise, bumping his fist against Gang-mu’s)
Gang-muAlles gute! (I wish you luck)
Scene 81F Hall Director’s Office (Present Time)
Gang-mu is seated in a chair at the table and Soo-ho stands, gun still trained on him...
Gang-mu(gruffly, due to feeling apologetic) Put the gun down. I may not look it, but I’m someone who can’t live without paying his debts.
Soo-ho(stone cold) How am I supposed to trust a guy who’s of two minds?
Gang-mu(sincerely) If we make it out of here ... let’s not meet again. ‘Cause if you show up in front of me again ... I’m gonna arrest* you at any cost.

*read: ‘save’ since Gang-mu thinks turning Soo-ho is the only way to give him a real life ㅠㅠ
Soo-ho(senses Gang-mu’s sincerity. lowering the gun) Get Jang Han-na to stand down immediately.
Gang-mu(can’t possibly do that) And if Kang Cheong-ya makes off with all the settlement funds?
Soo-hoIf Comrade Kang gets it in her head to run, you think Jang Han-na will be able to stop her? And while being pursued by the ANSP?
Gang-mu‘Blindly trust in Kang Cheong-ya and wait’? If she gets her hands on that massive sum, she could flit off to anywhere in the world and live a new life — one that would afford her every comfort, at that — but we should just wait and trust that she’ll return to a dorm that’s been rigged with explosives?
Soo-ho(looking at Gang-mu with cold eyes)
Gang-muIs Kang Cheong-ya some Bodhisattva? Is she a nun???
Soo-hoYeah. What you say is true. Did you think ’cause it’s me I wouldn’t be anxious?
Gang-mu(that’s unexpected) ??
Soo-hoIf she gets her hands on hundreds of millions, she might just leave for a third country. No, she might even incite Nam Tae-il, kill us all, and advance through the ranks as a spy. Since that would be safer than making an enemy of North Korea.
Gang-mu(watching him)
Soo-hoEverything about this situation is telling her to betray us, that that’s the only way she’ll live ... Comrade Kang will waver, too. She’ll deliberate.
Gang-mu!!
Soo-hoSo how do you think Comrade Kang will react ... if she knows she’s being tailed and surveilled?
Gang-mu……
Soo-hoYou’re backing Comrade Kang into a corner doing this. You’re pushing her to betray us.
Gang-mu……
Soo-ho(in desperation) This is the only shot I’ve got right now. I can only trust in Comrade Kang and wait.. I haven’t got another option.
he says, pulling the encrypted transmission out of his pocket and thumping it down on the table before leaving.
<Self-destruct along with hostages by 24:00 Friday. Should you violate orders, we will execute Lim Soo-hee>
From Gang-mu’s surprised face as he reads the encrypted transmission, transition to ...
