Snowdrop Quotes – Yeo Jeong-min

“‘Spy.’ The fuzz say that all the time. Don’t you know they accuse us of being reds over the slightest thing?”

EP01

“What’s with [calling her] ‘Chicken Poop-house’, huh? Leaving a person’s name aside. (…) Bun-ok-ssi is written with the characters ‘fragrant-bun’ and ‘jade-ok.’* Hye-ja-ya.”

[*n.b. I broke this down in the notes on Bun-ok’s character profile.]

“Hey, where’s Young-ro? (…) How could you just run back in alone in that situation?!”

Jeong-min: Hey, it may not matter to the daughter of a rich household like you, but if we all get kicked out, Young-ro might not have the means to rent a single room right away.
Hye-ryeong: Don’t act all high-and-mighty. The day she moved– the day she moved in, she passed ddeok around to all the rooms.
Jeong-min: Because she’s the daughter of a rice-cake shop! Don’t you know she’s a work scholarship student? She answers phones at the front counter with Bun-ok-ssi.

“Fight.”

[n.b. This is what Jeong-min keeps repeating as she hands out homemade petrol bombs at the student demonstration. The word ‘tujaeng’ (鬪爭) means ‘protest, struggle, strike, fight, battle.’]

EP02

“Yoon Seol-hee, shut your mouth. You think if we throw him out he’ll be the only one to die? (…) ‘Spy.’ The fuzz say that all the time. Don’t you know they accuse us of being reds over the slightest thing?”

“Here, lift it, lift it. Open it, open it, quickly. We’re going to strip, so close your eyes. Close your eyes, your eyes. Hey, if we’re caught we’ll all die anyway. Strip fast.”

“Are you seriously mental? He can’t even walk properly. You’d chase someone like that out?”

“Those bobbies, harabeoji, unconditionally accuse kids who protest of being reds, saying they drive a wedge between the people and the government and foment mistrust.”

[n.b. ‘harabeoji’ = ‘grandpa,’ but it’s used to address men of that age bracket more generally.]

EP03

“Young-ro-ya. Young-ro-ya. It’s me, Jeong-min eonni. I was worried. You all right?”

“I also don’t think it’s Sea of Blood’s place to dictate to us.”

[n.b. This dropped out of the Disney+ subs, but Bun-ok and the students refer to Ms Pi as ‘Pi-bada’ (피바다), meaning ‘blood-sea’ since her surname, Pi (皮), is a homophone for blood, ‘pi’ (血).]

“Why a bike? (…) Ah, yeah, that’d be better. There’s one in the clubroom, so I’ll bring it.”

“Young-ro-ya, you get on, too. You going down with him will be safer than a man going down alone. Hurry!”

EP04

“Hold up. Bun-ok-ssi checked the invitation tickets. If she saw a man who wasn’t at ticketing, she’s bound to find it strange. (…) I feel bad towards Bun-ok-ssi, but there’s no other way. No matter what, we have to play if off. No matter what.”

“He’s a student activist being chased by the fuzz; we couldn’t turn a blind eye.”

“Ma’am, Young-ro’s a first year now. It’s better that I leave. I also helped that man pro-”

EP06

“How? How’s she supposed to take responsibility? We were fooled, too. Neither Young-ro nor I knew he was a spy.”

“I’ll remain here, too. I also played an active part. Young-ro’s saying she’ll stay; as her eonni, I can’t just leave like a coward to save my own skin.”

EP08

“Me and Young-ro and Seol-hee even stripped naked. Not knowing he was such a poor excuse for a human being. I mean, how can he not send Young-ro out? When he’s fully aware of her circumstances?”

EP11

“They’re people who can do worse than this. My older cousin who was participating in union activities at the factory was dragged off to the Samcheong Re-ducation Camp and died. They think of the citizens’ lives like the lives of mayflies; there’s nothing they wouldn’t do.”

[n.b. Sometimes called the The Samcheong Education Corps, the Samcheong Re-education Camp (三淸敎育隊) was essentially a military-style political prison camp established 4 August 1980 following Chun Doo-hwan’s declaration of martial law.]

Listen to you. ‘A fated love’? You’re completely smitten.

EP12

“Hah, you gonna keep saying stuff only you’d say? Right now the ANSP are outside deciding whether or not to kill us but, what? The ANSP ajusshi kissed–?”

“They’re bastards who even shot innocent citizens dead in order to take power. What wouldn’t they be capable of?”

EP14

“No way. Guys, it can’t be. Young-ro’s family runs a rice-cake shop. Have you forgotten she passed out ddeok at the admission ceremony?”

“That’s right. It must be Young-ro’s dad who gave those sons of bitches merit pay while encouraging them to devote themselves to ‘serving’ their country and the people round the clock.”

EP16

“Still, the words ‘the hostage taking is a scheme for the presidential election’ made it on the air. (…) Sh-shouldn’t we do something or other, too?”
