Tale of the Nine Tailed – Filming Locations EP01-02

A round-up of identified and suspected filming locations that appeared in TotNT EP01-02, in order of appearance.

EP01

Fox Ridge 여우고개 (a.k.a. Road 144)

While it’s unclear whether they actually filmed here, Fox Ridge does in fact exist. As mentioned in one of the deleted scenes, it’s in the vicinity of Mt. Gwanak, not far from the Seoul National University campus. Its proper name is Nam Tae Ryeong More on that here.

Ji Ah’s House (interior)

This was confirmed to be a set in part two of the BTS set tour Kim Yong Ji (Yoo Ri) and Hwang Hee (Shin Joo) filmed. The upstairs and downstairs are separate, which Jo Bo Ah (Ji Ah) tricked Kim Yong Ji into discovering for herself when she gave her the tour.

Yeon’s House (interior)

This, too, was confirmed to be a set and features in the video mentioned above, as well as a number of BTS reels.

Gangnam Wedding Hall 결혼식장 (exterior & interior)

The wedding hall where Yeon executes Yeou Nui really is in Gangnam, and it appears they used both the exterior and interior to film. In real life, this is The Laville (더라빌).

Shin Joo’s Vet Clinic (interior)

This is a set, too, of course and is also featured in part two of the set tour.

Ilsan Lake Park

This is the park Yeon is sitting in when he first meets Soo Oh and gives him a bit of life advice. The two are actually on a small island in the middle of the lake called Dalmaji Island (달맞이섬). If you read our breakdown of EP03, you may remember that ‘dalmaji‘ is also the Korean name for evening primrose (달맞이꽃) and means ‘to welcome the moon,’ (though this is likely a coincidence). The park is located in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do.

This is also the same park where Yeon and Ji Ah decide to go witch-hunting in EP11, where Sae Rom is sitting when Jae Hwan gives her a birthday cake in EP14, where Rang cuts a deal for Yeon’s soul in EP16, and where Yeon sees a boy that strongly resembles Rang, also in EP16. The deleted picnic scene was likely filmed here, as well.

The inside is, of course, a set, but the exterior of the AIO is actually the Seoul Meteorological Office & Observatory (기상청 서울관측소), located in Seoul’s Jongno-gu. The interior was featured in part one Kim Yong Ji and Hwang’s Hee’s set tour.

No confirmation, but this was likely filmed at the tvN broadcast station, for obvious reasons.

The Snail Bride 우렁각시 (private room)

It’s unclear whether the private room that appears throughout the drama is a set or if it’s part of the Korean Folk Village credited at the end of the episode (since I can’t think of another scene in EP01 that might have been filmed there). I do know it isn’t part of the restaurant itself.

The Snail Bride 우렁각시 (exterior & restaurant)

In real life, this is the Insadong Hanok Teahouse (인사동 한옥찻집), located near Insadong’s Angook Station. I’ve been to a number of teahouses in the area, but never this one. The exterior and interior are actually one and the same in this case, and the interior layout and decor don’t appear to have been changed much for use in the drama. Unlike in the drama, however, they don’t serve meals; just tea and treats.

The hospital where Yeon and Ji Ah first cross paths in earnest isn’t actually a hospital at all. This is the Sungshin Women’s University Unjeong Green Campus (성신여자대학교 운정그린캠퍼스) located in Seoul’s Gangbook-gu. The campus was also used to film the scene in EP09 where Shin Joo smuggles Ji Ah out of the hospital.

Ji Ah’s House (exterior)

According to the note she leaves Yeon, Ji Ah’s house is located in Seodaemungu, Younhui-ro, near the Yeonsei University Sinchon Campus. That’s a considerable distance from Fox Ridge (north of the Han River rather than south), so Yeon would have seriously gone out of his way to rescue Ji Ah and return her safely to the accident site when she was a child. As far as the real world goes, I’m actually not able to confirm if this is the address where the scenes outside Ji Ah’s house were filmed. If nothing else, the house number matches.

Address (in-drama):

Other EP01 credited locations: Grand Intercontinental Seoul Parnas

EP02

Baekdudaegan, Yeon’s Domain

This was, of course, a set. If you watch some of the BTS reels you can see how much of it they actually built and how much was added in later using CG.

The River of Three Crossings

The same goes for the Samdocheon, of course. You get a pretty good look at the extent of the bluescreen in King Kong’s sixth BTS reel. tvN also released a video just about the Samdocheon CG.

Joseon 조선

The short Joseon Era scene where Yeon pulls aside a woman who’s the spitting image of Ah Eum was filmed at MBC Dae Jang Geum Park (MBC Dramia). If the drama you’re watching is a sageuk, chances are they filmed some of it here.

1910’s Salon (interior)

The brief scene of Yeon approaching yet another Ah Eum look-alike in 1910’s Korea was filmed at Nijimori Studio (니지모리 스튜디오) in Gyeonggi-do. You can see more photos of the studio here.

This is where Rang and Yoo Ri crash a funeral. Its true name is Unjeong Funeral Parlour (운정장례식장), also located in Gyeonggi-do.

Moze Department Store is the fictional department store owned by Yoo Ri’s fake parents. It’s also where Rang showed off his coin tossing skills and invited the hiker couple’s son to make a wish. In real life, this is First Garden (퍼스트가든) in Paju.

The scene outside the broadcast station where Ji Ah asks Yeon not to disappear on her was filmed outside the CJ E&M Center in Digital Media City, Seoul. This is also where they filmed the scene in EP07 where Soo Oh runs into the Urban Legends trio and glimpses their past lives.

Port-side Pojangmacha

The port where Rang first approaches Pyung Hee and where Yeon later crashes his solo drinking party is Jangseung Port in Geoje City. The scene was actually filmed right outside the coast guard dispatch station there.

While there is, in fact, an Eohwa Island (漁化島), its name uses different hanja and it’s located off the coast of North Korea. The fictional Eohwa Island (漁花島) is supposedly somewhere in the Yellow Sea, and multiple locations were used to shoot the scenes set there. The ferry approach and the pier Yeon and Ji Ah arrive at were filmed at Haegeumgang Village on Geoje Island (해금강마을 거제도), part of Galgot-ri (갈곶리) within Hallyeohaesang National Park (한려해상국립공원). The ferry they ride doesn’t normally go to the village, though. It’s used to ferry visitors to the nearby Haegeumgang sea caves (해금강십자동굴) and other tourist spots.

The supermarket where Yeon buys shikhye and somjjang (and later interrogates the owner) is actually a sushi restaurant called Dinosaur Sushi (공룡횟집). I haven’t been able to find any info on where they filmed the interior shots.

The Forest 숲

No location info on the forest, other than that many of the drama’s forest scenes were filmed on Jeju Island.

Jangsan Cave

The scene at Jangsan Cave was actually filmed at two adjacent locations: Sangjokam (상족암) and Haeshik Cave (해식동굴), both located in Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. The area is famously rich in dinosaur fossils, so not a bad choice for Imoogi’s origin story to take place.

The Library 도서관

The library where Jae Hwan digs up the old news articles Ji Ah asks for is the National Library of Korea

Other EP02 credited locations: Lotte Department Store
