Wind, Wind, Wind (바람 바람 바람)

‘Wind Wind Wind’ (Param Param Param) makes a brief but calculated appearance in EP01 of Snowdrop when Han-na enters An Gyeong-hui’s office at ANSP headquarters to find him checking the place for listening devices. As he pulls her aside, he cranks up the radio to cover their conversation, and this is the song that comes out of the speakers. Honestly, it’s more of a hidden easter egg than an insert song, but that’s what makes it fun.

The lyrics describe a lover who blew by and left like the wind. Even so, the singer continues to wait for his love to return. Though the genders are reversed, this is a subtle reference to Han-na and Gang-mu’s relationship, as she’s spent the last six years waiting for him to return and explain why he just up and left without a word. Appropriately, the song makes its brief appearance just moments before the two reunite.

First released in 1985, ‘Wind Wind Wind’ was composed and performed by Kim Bum-ryong. The song made him an overnight sensation and earned him a number of music awards that year, including ‘best new artist’ and ‘best teen artist.’ Needless to say, the song is another 80s megahit. Honestly, I’d love to give the music director a prize for best use of music. There’s a subtle genius to it all.

mun bakk-e gwiddurami ulgo
Outside the crickets chirp

sansae-deul jijeogwineunde
And the mountain birds sing

nae nim-eun oshiji-neun anhgo
My love* doesn’t come

eodum-mani jiteogane
The darkness only deepens

jeo meolli-en gita sori
The distant sound of a guitar

gwitga-e deullyeo-oneunde
Enters my ears

eonje nim-eun oshiryeona
When will my love come?

baram-man hwenghani bune
The wind just blows hollowly

nae nim-eun baram-iryeonga
Is my love the wind?

seuchigo jinaganeun baram
A wind which brushes on past

oneul-do jam mot irugo
Today, again, I lie sleepless

eodum sog-e jamgine
Swallowed by the darkness

geudae ireum-eun baram baram baram
Your name is wind, wind, wind

wattaga sarajineun baram
A wind that comes and then disappears

geudae ireum-eun baram baram baram
Your name is wind, wind, wind

nal ullyeo-nohgo ganeun baram
A wind that leaves me in tears and then departs

changga-e udukeoni anja
Sitting vacantly at the window

eodu’un chang-bakk barabomyeon
Gazing into the dark outside

him-eomneun nae son jaba-jumyeon
If [you] hold my listless hand

nim-eun got oshil geot gata
I get the sense my love will come at any moment

jeo meolli-en gyohoe jong sori
The distant sound of church bells

gwitga-e deullyeo-oneunde
Enters my ears

When will my love come?

*n.b. The word translated as ‘[my] love’ here is ‘nim’ (님). For ‘you,’ the singer uses ‘geudae’ (그대), which can also be interpreted to mean ‘my dear.’
